Today I wore... To My Graduation Ball...

My new corset top from Topshop. I love the stitching and gold zip detail. I think the colours fit perfectly into the current dark grungy look with a glam edge. Originally, as the occasion was a ball, I wanted to go for a black midi skirt and add a petticoat for a formal look. However I couldn't find one in time, so I opted for my friends grey Topshop mini skirt with frills down the back. (A bit more suitable for the club I was going to after aswell :-)).

Corset Top - Topshop £30
For this look, as usual, I mixed up masculine and feminine elements, teaming the corset top and skirt with black Topshop wedge boots, plenty of gold jewellery and essential red lips....

Corset top - Topshop, Skirt and Belt - Friends wardrobe, Black Wedge boots -Topshop, fringe bag - H&M,  Gold bracelet - Versace for H&M, Gold watch - D&G, Gold square ring - H&M.
I really like these jewellery pieces to add an edge to girly outfits...
Funnel Earrings - Topshop

Chunky chain - Forever 21. Red Lipstick - Collection 2000 - Colour: Queen of Hearts)
I was unsure how many different ways I could wear this corset top when I first bought it, but I'm so glad I did. I think this kind of top you can team with anything highwaisted. I plan to wear mine with denim shorts, midi or pencil skirts and a pair of black smoking trousers. Corset tops are definitely worth the investment, and not just a summer item. Topshop have some great ones for winter/Christmas, check them out...

My Graduation...

I've been busy busy busy the last few weeks, and to end all the hectic-ness in style, I had my graduation! Although I finished University in May, it was great to draw a line under uni and celebrate our degrees. Despite the nerves of having to juggle my gown, hat and new office high heels, whilst walking across the stage to collect my certificate, it was a great day and I really enjoyed myself :-) It was also lovely to catch up with all my fellow graduates, who, may I add, are a bunch of very talented people! I loved studying at Southampton Solent as it's such a creative uni, full of lots of inspiring people, with unique talents and styles.
Here's a few photograph's of my day.....

Underneath my gown I wore a black bodycon mid-length dress with wide scoop neck from Asos, and black courts with built in platforms from Office. Simple yet sophisticated was the idea....

Shoes - Office £68.00, Dress - ASOS £30.00

Now University is all done and dusted, I will post some of my project work and portfolio in the near future, for you all to check out...

I Love...

Statement Earrings!
During the summer I had 4 more piercings done on my left ear. So at the moment I love scraping my hair back, showing off my decorative ears, and adding oversized statement earrings to complete the look. At the moment they are still healing, but I'm looking forward to playing around with different combinations of studs. Here are some of the best statement earrings I've bought over the last few weeks...

Today I bought...

Today I bought.... A peacoat, a shirt and a Marilyn Monroe book, all from my local charity shops. Total Spend: £13.99!

The best buy has to be this navy peacoat, which I bought from The Salvation Army. I always find the best and oldest pieces here, and they have even given me a loyalty card, which put a big smile on my face :-)

M&S St Michael Peacoat £7.99 - The Salvation Army.

The Peacoat is one of those classic and timeless pieces, that is simple, versatile and yet so effortlessly stylish, particularly in navy. I love the oversized lapel and shoulders, that give it that masculine edge I am quite partial to. I will definitely get my wear out of this; and originally from M&S - St Michael, I know it's a quality piece that will last to.

Also from the same shop, is this 'granny' shirt, which I was drawn to by the print and colour. I love the lines of gold running through it, and plan to wear it over leather look leggings, with lots of gold jewellery, for a quirky, blingy look.

St Michael oversized shirt £2.99 - The salvation Army

Oversized shirts like this, are so unique and easy to wear, especially paired with the wardrobe staples such as skinny jeans, denim shorts or leather skirts/shorts/leggings. They can be buttoned up to the top for a boyish look, which is a key trend this season, or worn buttoned down for a more sexy look. Sometimes I even throw them on loose as cardigans!
Lastly I bought  this book called Marilyn, which tells the life and career of Marilyn Monroe. It is full of lots of beautiful images of the icon, portraying true beauty and classic glamour, and is a great source of inspiration, for retro inspired outfits.

'Marilyn' Book £4 - PDSA

Flicking through the pages, I found this image of Marilyn from 1954, in a peacoat with large collar similar to the one I've just bought. I love this image, she looks so effortlessly glamorous and chic, showing she was a true icon...

Inspiration...

Love this advert made for the launch of the Stratford Westfield Shopping centre, which opened last week. It shows 100 years of East London style in 100 seconds. Very Clever. Big thumbs up to the marketing team...
Love the take on each era through the fashion and dance. My Favourite has to be the 60's mod look, which eras do you like best?

Investment pieces: Forward Fashion Thinking? : The Wearable Vs The Impractical, Quality Vs Price

Recently I have been thinking about the quality and practicality of the clothes, shoes and accessories I’ve been buying. I know blogs are supposed to celebrate all the fabulous things in fashion, but I felt the need to share this topic and see what you think about my thinking….

It started off with jewellery. The ‘gold’ necklaces, rings, bangles, earrings that I have been buying in high street stores(most of them) and the sheer disappointment when they loose their colour; turning silver and red, within just a week or two of wearing them. Ok, you may say they only cost £10, what do you expect? Fast fashion right? They last as long as they stay in fashion, and then you move on. If they are half the price, than it doesn’t matter if they last half as long? Well it does to me. I buy items that I love the design of, items that I want to keep in my wardrobe for a lifetime, well at least a few years anyway. Sure it feels great to go for it and have these beautiful designs in your life, but it also sure is disappointing when that fav new gold necklace you’ve worn all week then has to go in the bin after turning copper. Or those lush black ankle boots, loose all their studs and the heels go wobbly. Not being able to wear these great garments is irritating...

What caused me to actually put this annoyance into words, is the recent parcel I received from a well known fashionable online retailer. I ordered a half price pair of grey suede, platform heeled ankle boots, some gorgeous classic, black platform courts and a pair of quirky, heart shaped earrings, that frankly looked so luscious you could eat them. So excited I was to receive them, (it’s like xmas every week), but I was soon disappointed when both pairs of shoes were so high, they would cause me pain within minutes, and the earrings so heavy the backs fell off and they fell out my ears; No exaggeration.
Fashion does not always equal practical or sensible. Man up? No pain no gain? Put up with these slight inconveniences for style and fashion darling? Ummm, nope. How can you look fabulous on a night out, when you shoes are so high you can’t even walk heel, toe, heel toe, or those statement earrings are pulling your earlobes to the floor?

Heel height: 16.5 cm (6.8 inches)
Platform height: 4cm (1.1 inches)

I know it’s not on the same scale as Lady Gaga donning a meat dress, or in shoes so high she needs assistance to walk, but I guess what I’m trying to say is, that I love design, but practicality and quality in fashion, are becoming more important to me. I hate the disappointment of throwing away worn and tired things that I still love, or avoiding wearing them altogether as you just can’t put up with their impractical nature. Prioritising quality and practicality is something I’m becoming more and more accustomed to. Is this the sign of a maturing consumer? A savvy shopper? Maybe! And why don’t I question why these items are being made this way? I might. But, there’s still a hell of a lot of consumers who part with their money for the ostentatious, yet poor quality and impractical goods on the high street. Which means retailers won’t be changing anytime soon. It calls in to question the idea of fast fashion. On-trend goods being churned out and then disposed of very quickly. Retailers are making money, and at the end of the day, that is really what is important.

It may seem that I’m taking all this a little too seriously, and I may well be. But I love fashion, design, dressing up and looking great, and sometimes feel restricted and limited, when I can’t wear the things that what I want to wear, due to their lack in durability or practicality. I know I’m not the only one. After discussion with friends, I’ve found they experience this too.

So at the end of all this debate? I’m favouring the idea of investment pieces. Well-made, durable and wearable. They may cost a little more, but wearing those beautiful pair of leather boots year in year out, are worth the investment.

What do you think? Would be great to hear you thoughts on this one.
Lots of love

Charity Shops: Undiscovered Vintage.

Recently graduated from Uni, I have found myself with little money to spend on clothes at the moment. So my housemate and I decided to visit the local Charity shops. Although it takes a little rummaging and a very honest shopping partner to re-ground you when you try on something totally horrific, (which you imagine, with a bit of alteration and a few accessories will look quirky cool -It won’t), Charity Shops are brilliant for finding cool vintage pieces that nobody really realises are, well, cool vintage pieces! Far cheaper than Vintage boutiques, Charity Shops are (with Hawk Eyes peeled) full of undiscovered retro pieces, at half the price. Plus spending your money here, is also giving to Charity! Bonus! Just remember the older the better; once you get past last year’s New Look and Primark stock, and the stigma sometimes attached with shopping in Charity stores, you can find some real ‘vintage’ gems…

Here’s what I bought today in my local Charity Shops in Portswood High Street:

St Michael Sunflower crop top 99p – The Salvation Army

St Michael Leather belt £1.50 – PDSA.

What do you think of this look? Does it have a 1950s feel?

Coincidently both these finds are by St Michael, which was the house brand for Marks and Spencer, from 1928 – 2000.  I sometimes find it difficult to guess which era some items are from, as similar trends have been reoccurring for decades. Although the designs of the labels are sometimes a clue, wouldn’t it be great if clothing had dates on them when they were made, like antiques or artwork?  What do you think?...

Happy Charity Shopping!
